After a long fight, the 2nd DCA ruled today that the proposed charter amendments submitted by the Citizens of St. Pete Beach are constitutional, do not violate the Florida Growth Management Act, and are to be placed on the ballot in November.
This is a victory for the hard working Citizens For Responsible Growth who fought city hall by walking the streets in the hot sun getting thousands of people to sign petitions to change the city charter as authorized by the Florida Constitution and the city charter. The effects will reverberate throughout the state as voters now have the power to determine the way their cities and counties can be developed. I hope that the Times will support this decision and hail it as a victory for all citizens of this state who are concerned about maintaining responsible growth SPB Opinion PDF.

Many thanks to all the petition collectors and signers for their hard work and support. All of our efforts paid off.
City Hall has been told by the court to let the people vote !

The Florida Hometown Democracy Amendment to the Florida Constitution, when approved in 2008, will make it mandatory for changes to your community's Comprehensive Plan to be approved by the citizens of the community.
In June, the Florida Supreme Court unanimously approved the citizen's initiative to amend the Florida Constitution for placement on the 2008 ballot. The Florida Hometown Democracy Amendment will "put the voters back in charge of the places where they live" by requiring that certain land use changes must be submitted to the local electorate for approval. But to get on the ballot, the initiative needs more signatures. It needs YOUR signature.
"We are committed to getting this citizen's initiative on the 2008 ballot." said FHD chair Lesley Blackner. "We love this state and hate the failure of local government to protect Floridians from bad growth. The best way to fix the broken machine is to change who approves comprehensive plan changes. We have greater faith in the electorate than we do in elected politicos." Blackner urges all Floridian voters to download the petition, sign it, mail it in, and get ALL of your friends and acquaintences to do the same.
"We need the people of Florida to get behind this historic opportunity to change the politics of growth once and for all. Let's get together and make this happen. The future of Florida will thank us," said Blackner. |

Resident's Rallying
According to an article in the St. Petersburg Times opponents of allowing Floridians the right to vote on how their community will be developed are predicting they will spend 65 MILLION dollars - YES 65 million dollars to stop an iniative called Hometown Democracy.
We live in a democracy and that means everyone is entitled to express their view … BUT in our opinion you should not try to trick the people to sign your petition; Floridians For Smarter Growth has designed petitions in a deliberate way to look like the grassroots Hometown Democracy petitions. A bait and switch game to lure signers? Read More From St Pete Times Article...
